How to change colors with a design and carry thread

My pattern is in a book, but I’m having a hard time figuring out how to carry the thread to the next stitch in a pattern where there is a design in the rows. The pattern says to weave in the strand yarn not in use every 2 or 3 stitches on the WS. Is this done with a yarn needle?

Thank you!!!

If you are using two yarns or more, you don’t cut and weave in, You twist the yarns by bringing the new color up under the working yarn, drop the working yarn and pick up the new yarn and start knitting. You twist the yarn every two or three times across the row.Twisting the yarn prevents holes where the new color is used.

See also the videos for fair isle and intarsia knitting under the Free Videos tab at the top of the page, Advanced Techs. I’m not sure which you’re doing.
What are you making? Can you give us a pattern name?

This sounds like catching the strands as in the methods salmonmac mentioned.
Catching isn’t the right word. I can’t think what it’s called right now.
