How to cast on when in the middle of a pattern?

I am doing a sweater pattern from “new directions in knitting” (Panels in plum pullover) This pattern is done by knitting the front panel, binding it off and then knitting the back panel. I did that so far and then it says to pick up 96 stitches along the left front and cast on 6 stitches (for the neck) and then pick up stitches along the back. I get it except I have never cast on stitches around the neck like that. When I cast on for the first time, I do the long tail method. How would I do that when I am basically creating stitches around the neck?

Does that make sense?

You can use any of the single cast on methods in the basic techniques tab at the top of this page. Cable cast on, backward loop cast on, or knit-on cast on.

Hope that helps.
