How to cast on two colors

I am trying to begin knitting a candy cane pattern scarf but I am not sure the best way to cast on both yarns. I usually cast on using the backward loop method. I find it easier.

Backward loop is easy, but it’s not a great cast on. There’s always yarn stretched out at the end and it’s not easy to knit into. There are much better cast ons.

How do you want the two colors? Every other stitch?

no its two rows red and two rows of the white yarn

If it’s an actual row then you just cast on with one color and knit till you want the next and start knitting with the new color. If you are only two rows between changes you can carry the color up the side.
