How to Bobble? - edited in reply - Need More great help!

Hi,

Working vine pattern on my sweater front.

For the directions MB (make bobble), it states,

Knit, Purl, Knit, Purl then knit all in the next stitch.
Turn.
P5, then sl 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th st over 1st st - 1 st remains.

I’m a newbie and am now really lost. For the first part, when it says “knit all in the next stitch”, what, exactly do I do?

If any can provide really simple, very, very detailed step-by-step instructions for a total beginner, I would be unbelievably grateful.

Knit, Purl, Knit, Purl then knit all in the next stitch.
Turn.
P5, then sl 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th st over 1st st - 1 st remains.

You knit into the stitch, but don’t slide it off. Bring the yarn to the front between the needles and purl into the same stitch again, yarn to back, knit into the stitch yet again, yarn to front, purl, yarn to back, knit. Then slide it off. You’ll have 5 stitches where there was one.

Turn the work and purl these 5 stitches. Then lift the second stitch from the right point over the first one and off the needle–like doing a psso. Then lift the 3rd, 4th, and 5th over the same way.

Bobble!

Thanks, I think I may have it.

Are you saying that when I “knit into the stitch”, that I go thru all the motions of a knit stitch, without sliding it off the needle? Continue ding this for the purls as well all in the same stitch still on the needle? Sounds as if that stitch is going to get very tight and tricky. Yikes.

I’ll give it a try. Still sounds confusing but then again, I am so very new to all of this.

Once again, THANKS for the help. I really can’t tell you how much I’ve needed all this great advice! Super folks out there!

You’ve got it–all those stitches are in the same one. Surprisingly, it’s quite doable.

Just a few more questions regarding the way the pattern for MB (Make Bobble) is worded…

Pattern says… Knit, Purl, Knit, Purl then knit all in next st. Turn. etc

I understand what you said about knitting all into one stitch, but before I do that one big stitch, do I also Knit, Purl, Knit, Purl THEN do all that AGAIN into the big stitch???

As for the second part after the Turn, when I slip the stitches, I just slip all the remainder of the stitches of the bobble over the one stitch? Sounds very stupid, but sl 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th… once I slip one stitch over, the next becomes 3rd, correct? I don’t go three more in. As I said, I sound so stupid here.

Last question for this…

Below the MB directions, there is a note in bold that I do not understand. Do I do the note every time I do the bobble stitch because after i turned I ended up on the Wrong Side?

NOTE: On WS row, k the st remaining from making the bobble

I didn’t have any stitches remaining after slipping all stitches. Just the one stitch still on the Right needle (then again, I’m turned and on the wrong side) If I knit it while still turned, it ends up on the left needle when I turn the work again to finish working the row, which I assume I do as the pattern calls for a repeat as follows:

Row 1 (RS): *P7, CB2, k1, p3, LT2, MB, rep from * twice more, p2.

You do the kpkpk into the one stitch, and have 5 on the right needle.

Turn the work, and purl those 5 stitches as if they were individual stitches from the start. You lift the 4 of the 5 stitches that you just purled over the stitch closest to the tip. It will be easy to tell which are which because they’ll all be kind of clumped together.

Then turn your work over again. The stitch left from the bobble will now be on your left needle. Knit it and finish the row.
