How much yarn to buy?

Hello,
I have a pattern that calls for 900g of Drops Eskimo, which comes in 50g balls. Does that mean I need to buy 18 balls?? Seems like alot?
It’s a turtleneck that is 62 cm long, using 8mm needles if that helps…
Thanks!

if you’re using the exact yarn called for in the pattern, then it’s likely right. a quick way to check would be to see if there’s errata about the pattern on the DROPS site, or even if that pattern is on ravelry and has comments/forum entries. there’s a sweater i want to make and the suggested yarns are 100g balls, and i need 13-15 of them, so… yeah, lots of yarn for larger items.

What it really means is that you should buy 19 or 20 balls because it’s not fun to run out at the end of a project. Scrabbling around to find another ball in the same dye lot or come up with another way to make it work out is a common problem.

What’s your pattern? Can you link to it?

that too, thanks GG… much easier to keep the receipt and return a few skeins than to run out and not be able to get more, or have to sub another dye lot.

In addition to the above, the yarn is a super bulky wool.

The 18 skeins work out to about 1000yds which is at the lower end of the usual estimates for yardage for an adult sweater.

So seems like a reasonable amount (plus the recommended spares) to buy.

Thanks to All! And most of all for the suggestion to buy extra - I wouldn’t have done that!!!
