How much can I tweak a pattern?

I’m making this shawl right now.

I love the shape of the shawl but don’t like the “lacy” look on the front. I’d rather it be plain stockinette or garter stitch actually. Since the knitting of the lacy part has no increase or decrease in stitch until you reach the sleeve area, can I just knit straight through without changing the shape of the shawl?

It should work fine. I’d suggest using larger needles on the border because the lace is a looser gauge than a plain st pattern - garter, stockinette, rib…
