How many to cast on for a scarf?

True enough. Thanks all!

Since Jane mentioned that garter is compact lengthwise…What stitch would be better? (Don’t want the one that rolls, tehe)
note:this is for future reference…

I was wondering why my scarf was so stretchy, and not getting longer very fast. Live and learn, but seems like you just can’t know enough info before you just have to ā€˜dive in’

I also had to rip this one out for making scarf too many stitches wide.(twice)

Good luck on returning the yarn. I would take it all in, even the one you used. It doesn’t hurt to try, after all, they did make a mistake in reccomending it to you!

I will probably make my scarf a little neck warmer thing…call it a scarfette, hehe

A favorite pattern among KH’ers is the scrunchable scarf. Another popular one whose name is often bandied about is ā€œmy so called scarf,ā€ but from what I have been able to read about it, although it’s very pretty on the front, the back is rather plain, and it’s not the easiest stitch pattern to do.

I’m rather partial to brioche stitch, aka brioche rib (see middle swatch) myself. It’s very lush and fluffy. Note that if you choose to do brioche, when binding off, treat the stitches that you k2tog’d in previous rows as one stitch. (This should make sense to you when you get there.) Oh here… this picture shows the stitch better, but I’d follow the instructions from the other link. Much easier to do with a set up row.

There are a bunch of reversible stitch patterns listed here that would work for scarves too. To use those, just cast on as many stitches as need to get the width you want (make sure the CO number matches the multiple given), and keep knitting until you’re sick of it.

Of course, KPC has a lot of scarves to choose from too.

I hope I’m not too discouraging about garter stitch scarves… I’m a little prejudiced against them because I tried to do one as my first project and I gave up after only a couple feet – it was just too slow going. (Luckily I perservered with my knitting even though I gave up on the scarf. I learned that hats were much faster, especially when knit with two strands of yarn.;))

take it back and exchange it for something heavier weight

Thanks Jane! And yes, we want to see some distance, and yes, I agree with the ā€˜hats’ idea also…(more interesting anyway)

AND also, Thanks for all the links and the suggestions!

Double the yarn! Yes, I have…much better. Now, I need to be brave and learn some new stitches!
