How many rows do I have to do to complete this pattern: Dec 1 st on armhole edge of next and 12 foll alt rows, then on every 8 foll 4th rows times and at the same time dec 1 st on neck edge of next and 18 foll alt rows then on every 5 foll 4th rows. There should be 5 stitches left. I presently have 50 stitches on my needle and the rest are on stitch holder. How many rows do I have to knit, it seems like there are more rows on the neckline than on the armhole side. It doesn’t make sense since the number of rows needs to be the same on both sides, right?

It’s going to take to row 57 to complete the decreases. The number of decrease rows needn’t necessarily be the same on both edges depending on your pattern.
What is the name of your pattern and designer?
At the armhole edge, call the next row, row 1. Then you would decrease on rows 1,3,5,7,9,11,13,15,17,19,21,23 and 25. Following that decrease on rows 29,33,37,41,45,49,53 and 57. There will be 21 total decreased sts at the armhole edge.
At the same time decrease at the neck edge on the same alternate rows 1-25 as the armhole decreases and also on rows 27,29,31,33,35 and 37. Then on rows 41,45,49,53 and 57. There will be 24 total decreased sts at the armhole edge.
That’s 45sts decreased leaving you with 5sts.

Thank you so much for your reply, knowing the total number of rows helps me to know I am on the right track. unfortunately, I think my sweater will be way too long… but it’s ok I consider this sweater my practice sweater.
