How many really do gauge in fair isle in the round?

OH DEAR…THE PAIN! THE PAIN!

Yes Jan I have done just as you indicated over and over for 4 or is it 5 days now. I did the crochet provisional cast on.

I don’t understand how a blasted mitten can be so darn hard…after all I have done a couple of pairs of socks…should be similar. Of course…this all started because I was TRYING to make a swatch in a colorwork pattern just to make sure I got a hat that fit. (I just made one with WW yarn, and didn’t do a colorwork swatch and it was just fine)

But this is with fingerling yarn, knit picks “gloss” so I thought I should do a swatch of the colorwork because I had some concerns about the pattern. I got the size 5 needle to get the stockinette gauge of 24st/4in.

But this pattern also states: 32 stitches and 36 rows needed for gauge. Recommending that you use a 1 size larger needle to get this. This did not compute…larger needle, MORE ST
ITCHES? Ok…I better do a swatch just in case. I asked the designer if there was a mistake in the gauges…and she indicated it was correct.

Problem was initially…I could not do the swatch in the round…in pattern. I just kept loosing stitches all over the place…over and over. SOOOOOOOOO I decided to knit a tube…then thought why not just make the mittens BEFORE the Tam and Cowl and use the mittens as my gauge “tube”.

:roflhard:

^$&* cuff!

Once again I have spent an entire day and I am just to row 6 of the mitten.
I at least have the cuff securely done. I don’t know why when I inspected the K2tog of knitting in the hem I just couldn’t see a problem…till a hole appeared 2 rows later and I’d see a several dropped stitches.

Anyways…now I have a problem reading the chart for the thumb.

Wish I could explain it properly…but basically you do the mitten chart…PM do a KLL then KRL PM then do chart again and you now have top and bottom of the mitten. I assume this is NOT a increase row…BECAUSE 2nd row…shows only 2 stitches.

3rd Row says KLL, red stitch, white stitch, KLR

4th row shows only 4 stitches…soooo this means the KLL and KRL are not increases?

I am confused so I am gonna go to Youtube to see if there are an videos on thumbs.

I think next time I do a swatch in color…I will do a tube and not a sock, mitten or glove…just saying!

Sadly, last week I did a colorwork gauge in the round…using 3 stitch 1 color 3 stitch 2nd color…and at the LYS…when I was buying more yarn (like I need more yarn) and the ladies there had a good laugh at my chicken viking hat, then told me that I should do the gauge in the PATTERN. AND I had the right gauge, but a little puckered. So I started over…in pattern.

Which was a complete fail. SO here I am…with 1 cuff…and I should have finished this whole project within 5 days.

I am knitting for hours and hours daily with nothing to show yet…except a felting cuff.

Oh you poor thing! I think by this time I’d look for a new pattern! :teehee:

You know, you can just do a regular cast on (like long tail) and then follow the pattern as it’s written other than the hem. The hem can just be done by hand rather than all in one piece. That might be easier with such a small project. It can even be done when the rest of the mitten is done.

Yes, sewing the hem by hand after the mitten is finished works just fine and in fact, many patterns are written that way. If you have a long enough tail from the cast on, you can use that for the sewing.
I know it seems like hours of trial and error and no forward progress but you are learning as you do this. These very pretty mittens are worth the time.
