How do you measure the size of a blanket

Hello everyone

How do I measure the size for example if I am free hand knitting say a 15" blanket ,

15"? I’m assuming what you really mean is how many to cast on? Make a swatch with the yarn and needles you want to use then measure the gauge. That is how many stitches you get over 4 inches. Then divide by 4 to get stitches per inch and go from there.
