How do you make your edges look good?

I have a question on edges…

I’ve learnt to knit the last stitch on a purl row and to slip the first stitch on every row to make the edge better looking and easier to sew together with another edge. BUT my edges don’t look super anyway.

I don’t have bumps on the edges, they’re clean, but they bend towards the purl side and stretches the stitch next to the edge stitch. It looks wonky. (I wish I had a digital camera so I could show you what I mean…)

Is there a trick?

Now it seems like I have to sew one or one and a half stitch in from the edge to have a better looking surface when doing mattress stitches… This will be difficult in my next project as it has ribbing at the bottom and “stealing” stitches will change the k3p3-ribbing along the seams.

Any thoughts? :??

If I’m understanding the problem correctly, you can just add a one-stitch selvage on either side and do a slip stitch at the beginning of every row.
