How do you make gaps on a fabric?

Ok, so, first off, hi everyone.

I’ve started knitting for a while now, and I was just wondering how do you create a gap while kntting?

What I mean is not a hole in a row that will just be a hole on your fabric, but a gap between stitches that will stay for the rest of the work. Please do respond, as I don’t know what to try.

I think you’re speaking of a yarn over (YO), which is to say that you’ll knit along, then just bring the yarn forward then over your right needle, then keep knitting along. Keep in mind that in order to keep the same number of stitches throughout your work, for every YO you have to either K2tog or SSK to create an equal decrease as your adding a new stitch with the YO.

In addition, on the next row following a YO, you knit the YO through the back loop (ktbl) and you’ve now made an eyelet in your fabric.

Hope that makes sense. I’m sure someone with a bit more knowledge may be able to flesh out my response or add something that I may have forgotten to tell you.

Thanks for the tip, it’s good to know that decorative stitch.

But that’s not what I’m looking for… You see, I’m knitting this hand for a project I’m working on, and I want it to look something like this:

In other words, I want to know how to create the gaps between each finger. Maybe someone can help me?

Okay, don’t think in terms of leaving gaps. What you need to do is knit each finger separately, the way you do for gloves.
(1) When you get to the place where the fingers separate, start knitting back and forth on just the stitches for right finger. When the finger is long enough, bind it off.
(2) Next, attach the yarn just to the left of that finger’s base, bind off several stitches (there’s your gap), and starting knitting back and forth on the stitches for the middle finger. When that one is done, bind it off.
(3) Repeat for the third finger.

Hope that makes sense. BTW, if you’re going for a realistic looking hand, don’t leave large gaps – just a stitch or two. Look at a glove pattern for guidance.

Thank you! I knew I had to do something like that, but I just couldn’t dare to take the risk. I was researching on glove making, but all I could find were intricate patterns that just said instructions with no actual guidance.

Hundreds of thanks.
