How do you "knit into the next stitch 5 times"?

Hello everyone,

This is my first post here so I’ll introduce myself at the same time. My name is Mary Lou and I live in far western Maryland in a small town named Friendsville. I grew up in Pittsburgh, Pa where I learned to crochet. Once upon a time I made crocheted lace doilies but the little tiny hooks seem to have become more difficult to work with. (Must be the hooks, not my ability to see the little tiny end) Since moving to Md I learned to knit and have made some basic things. But now I’d like to do some lace knitting and have accumulated some wonderful patterns. One pattern that I especially like says to “knit into the next stitch 5 times”. In another place in the pattern it says to knit into the next stitch 7 times. Well, I tried doing it the way I thought was the most logical but I don’t think it was correct. I know how to knit into the front and back of the same stitch, but how do you knit into the same stitch multiple times? Especially when it is 5 or 7 times. I want to make sure I know how to do the stitches in the doily before starting it.

Thanks for anyone’s help.

I know three ways of working multiple stitches into a single stich.

You can alternate knit and purl in the same stitch.
You can alternate front and back knit into the same stitch.
or:
you can do what I find easiest - alternate knit and yarnover to make the total needed. This works wonderfully for odd numbers and if I need an even number worked into a single stitch I work an odd number, then knit through the back of the stitch for the last increase.

You can knit into the front, the back, the front, the back and the front again. An easier way might be to knit into it, yo, knit again, yo, knit again, all in the front.

This is my preferred method…alot smoother
Thanks again, Mario!
