How do I sew knitting together?

Hi I’m new and need to know what pattern means when it says “join side and sleeve seams by top sewing” What is top sewing?
Can you see it from the right side?

There are several ways to “seam” knitting. The most common is mattress stitch and using 3 needle bind off is best for shoulders. Here’s some links.

Im just a tad intimidated by mattress stich and such, so I usually just take my tapestry needle and some yarn the same color as the bit Im sewing and sew the end stitches together like one would hand sew something. Its held up pretty well so far.
