How do I "...join yarn to remaining sts..." AFTER I cut my "working" thread? ...ALSO~ RS vs. WS

1st of all, here’s a link to the pattern that I am working on and will refer to…

      http://www.bernat.com/pattern.php?PID=230

So here is the part of the pattern I am at. …In fact, this is the part that I am STUCK at:

Next row: (K2tog) 5 times. 5 sts. Break yarn leaving a long end.
Thread through rem sts. Draw up tightly and fasten securely.
Sew thumb seam.

With RS of Mitt facing, join yarn to rem sts. Pick up and knit 2 sts under thumb. Knit to end of row.

Next row: Knit, knitting tog the 2 sts picked up under thumb. 36 sts.
Knit 16 rows even.

Specifically; How do I…

With RS of Mitt facing, join yarn to rem sts. Pick up and knit 2 sts under thumb.
? …especially considering that I JUST broke my “working” yarn?!?

I just CAN NOT seem to get it! Can some one help me with this? Maybe by breaking it down AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE? This part is making me CRAZY! I just wanna learn it ASAP, so I can get past it ASAP, and get on with the rest of it (which I now CLEARLY understand!) to finish it! Especially as I’d like to make MANY of them so that I can practice all the parts I’ve JUST learned, so I can perfect them!

Also, another quick tidbit… This pattern has RS and WS on certain rows <ex: Shape Thumb. 1st Row (RS)> and other parts it say a certain side should face a certain way. I thought the RS was just the side that looked best…

How can a specific row be a specific side? When it says “with RS facing…” How do I know which side that is? And what should it be facing? toward me, away from me?

ALL of my appreciation,
Mindy

Here’s my answer on the other thread. Try not to make posts in different threads for the same question. The RS is whichever side you want it to be, in garter st both looke the same. The pattern did say this in the beginning “Work 9 rows garter st (knit every row) noting that first row is wrong side.”

I just don’t understand how a ROW can be the RS or WS…

If the RS of the piece is facing you as you knit, that’s a RS row; if the WS is facing you while you work it, that’s the WS row. Don’t get too hung up on the word ‘row’, sometimes rs/ws is given for information.

More specifically, a RS is the side you want to show the world… either it has a pattern you’re working that looks nice, is the flat side (knit) of a stockinette stitch, etc. The WS is the side that helps you work the piece but doesn’t look as nice as the other. RS means right side and WS means wrong side. I hope that clears it for you!

Yeah, like Suzeeq said… RS means they want that side facing you and the same when they put WS
