Should have paid more attention when my grandmother was alive!
I have a pattern for a Tam hat that is from the Lion Brand website pattern number kim-beret. I am confused with the brim of the hat. I know to cast on 80 sts (this will not fit around my head) then I am to join and work circularly 1 1/2 ". Inc Rnd (K1, k into front and back of st) around - 120 sts.
Do I just need to start with something easier…the skill level is Easy +
If anyone can help I appreciate it!
They want you to increase in every other stitch by knitting into the front and back loop. So k1, kfb, k1, kfb, etc. If you’re not sure how, here is a video. When they say “Inc Rnd” they’re just telling you that the next set of directions are for the Increase Round.

Can you post a link to the pattern and tell us what yarn you’re using and needle size? More info is always better when asking questions.
The increase that is known as KFB for knit front and back is very easy to do. Check the video section under increases to see the video. I think you’ll do fine making this hat.

Have you knit a gauge swatch? At the recommended gauge of 18 stitches per inch, 80 stitches is about 9 inches. The K 1, P1 stitch should give you stretch to fit around your head.
You say that the 80 stitches will not fit around your head. What is your gauge and head size?
I know to cast on 80 sts (this will not fit around my head) then I am to join and work circularly 1 1/2 ".
A hat is usually a little smaller than your head size so the 80 sts will probably stretch to fit, and that will work out right.
I will do that, thank you so much for all your help!:cheering:
Thank you so much…I will do that. This is my first time ever in a Forum so thanks for your help!
