How do I count rows?

Hi! I am a very beginning knitter and I’m working on a baby basketweave blanket. I knitted 10 rows, then the pattern for the next 10 rows is to K10, P10…K10. The problem is that I can’t tell if I’ve finished these K/P 10 rows or whether I’ve done 8 rows. How can I count? I counted the ridges and I still can’t tell from where to start counting.

I do have a counter, but I think I forgot to use it for a few rows. I’m either on row 8 or 10. What do I do? Is there a website with pictures? I didn’t do a swatch (was I supposed to?). Is there any hope?? Thank you much. I am so enjoying this new hobby. I pray that I can get good enough to be comfortable and relaxed by knitting! Thanks for any help! Please feel free to email too.

It’s easier to count knit stitches than purl stitches, in my opinion. Count the number of V’s. Each one is a row. If it’s hard to see the V’s for some reason, use the point of your needle and put it in the first V stitch and use the needle to count the holes in the V’s all the way up. Don’t count the stitches on the needles as a completed row, as they haven’t been knit yet.

Ingrid - this is one of the best descriptions! You really do have a way with words - and bananas!

Thanks! I’ve counted a lot of stitches in my day. I like yellow, easy-to-eat fruit, too. I was going to say something else, but no matter what I say, it comes out wrong, if you know what I mean. :oo: Gotta be careful around here!

Oh – there are SO many comments to make right now!

You’ve got the hang of this place already! :roflhard:
