How do I achieve a "clean" edge on a P cast on on an existing P row?

I am knitting a baby bolero, working on the left front inside edge. The pattern reads “Row 3. Cast on 2 sts, p to end.” I have tried several “techniques,” and none results in a clean edge (unlike when I worked the right front side, I got a clean edge on the K row). What is the best technique to use that will yield the best result?

You could try a purl co; do like a knit co only purled.
