How Did I Ever Knit On These Things?

when i first started knitting about 4 years ago, i did loads of novelty scarves on large needles, like all new knitters do

in the last year or so, i probably have not knit on a needle larger than a 10

now i am working a project that requires part of it to be knit on size 17 needles

man, it feels like i am knitting with bowling pins!

how did i ever use these things?

I have the same problem when switching from small to large needles. It’s like going back to kindergarten with the big crayons! It feels so much slower, but each row is about an inch so it evens out in the end. :rofling:

I feel the same way every time I make anothe rpair of clogs, and those are only on 13’s!

After working with smaller needles, the big ones really do feel awkward. My hands don’t feel big enough! But as Ingy says, the project just flies–that kind of gratification is nice every now and then!

Because of my arthritis I always have two projects going. One one small needles and one on large needles. I’m constantly switching back and forth. Of course large for me is 10’s or maybe 13’s. I’m more sensitive to the size yarn than the size needles. Going from fingering weight to bulky (or even DK) is tactiley (tactily?) unnerving. (I think I made up a word)

Tactilely–I had to look it up!

Thanks Angelia. Google spellcheck said both were incorrect. What do they know?

:rofling: :rofling:

I like creativity with the English language! Just don’t tell my students…

it’s so funny to see this topic… i picked up my “first” needles last nite & gave another pair of my “firsts” to a friend recently… (size 13 or 15’s maybe) so she could start a scarf (which she’s finished btw, i’m so proud) and i SWEAR it’s like the big crayons for little hands… y’know… those jumbo ones… till ya get to the big box of crayolas w/the sharpener!

:happydance:

I recently used side 34’s to do a scarf… now that’s big

Size 34? Egad, are those logs?

Man they sure felt like it when I started… but toward the end… they got more comfortable, made size 10’s fell small…

how many pairs HAVE you made, KK?

I still haven’t started my first pair yet!

lol i bought the pattern and ran screaming cuz it was just tooooooooo many directions for me! i like nice simple “Knit knit knit done” instructions so i can work on the fly!

I haven’t made my first pair yet either…wayyyyyyyyyyyy too much thinking with this pattern!

This is a little OT in this thread, but reading it reminded me of the set of needles that I found among my mother and grandmother’s knitting needles. I have them all, still. The ones I laughed at were the pair I did my first knitting on!! I know it’s them because I knit so tightly that they have a big bend in them! I remember my mother complaining that I was bending her needles, but she kept them, as I will. samm
