How can I see if my shawl is long enough?

I’m knitting a neverending shawl… I want to see how close I am.

Can I insert one of those lifeline thingys and take it off the needles to see how it lays?

How much expansion should I count on for blocking? It’s knit in garter stitch with size 19’s, so the stitches are huge.

Also, I’m at a friend’s house for the day - I brought my knitting, of course … is there any way to insert a lifeline without a tapestry needle? I have extra knitting needles…

TIA!!!

A lifeline is an excellent idea. Since the stitches are so big, you could probably tape a piece of yarn onto anything smooth and rigid–a pen, even–and slide it on through.

Don’t assume you have to block. If you like the way it looks, leave it.

Wow, thanks for the tip! I used a pencil and tied the yarn to it to insert the lifeline, it worked wonderfully!

It looks like the shawl is done to me… I tried it on this mannequin that my friend has and it looks like a good size. I don’t have quite as many rows as I’m supposed to… but really, I don’t care anymore, I just want to have it done in time for Christmas!

It definitely needs blocking though… it curls up at the pointy part.

Thanks so much for your help, Ingrid!!

 Merry Christmas!!
