Horizontal ribbing?

Hi, can anyone tell me how to do horizontal ribbing? I’m using the USM to knit, and can’t find any instructions for doing horizontal ribbing. I’m making a V-neck cardigan, and just can’t figure out how to do the button band/neck piece.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

It depends how wide you want the ribs to be, of course, but you can do alternating bands of stockinette stitch and reverse stockinette. For example:

Row 1 (RS): Knit
Row 2 (WS): Purl
Row 3: Knit
Row 4: Knit
Row 5: Purl
Row 6: Knit

In this example, rows 1-3 form 3 rows of stockinette stitch and rows 4-6 form 3 rows of reverse stockinette.

Does that help??

Thanks for your reply.

As I said in my original post, I’m knitting with a machine and I don’t think I can purl on it. I know to do ribbing with it, I have to use a latch tool and latch up the stitches I want ribbed.

The band/neck needs to be 7 stitches wide…and about 30" long…I just don’t think it’s gonna look right if I do vertical ribbing. Oh well, I’ll figure something out, I guess.

Thanks again,

How about making the band separately and sewing it on?

I don’t think there are very many machine knitters at KH, so you might want to change your subject line to specify that it is a USM question to make it more noticeable to people who have experience in that area. I also found this recent thread, which includes some links to a few USM resources. HTH
