Hi everyone!

I am new here!
I’ve been knitting for about 6 years on and off and I’m having some trouble with a pattern. I think it may be a little misleading or could be I just have no clue what I’m doing.

I am working on the “green” squares which call for knitting of 2 rows, then purling the next. Repeat. Seems simple enough, but it doesn’t give me the look of the “green” squares in the picture.

My ridges (ribs) are much wider and I’m only able to fit 3 ribs in the square.

So, something is off! Any idea what I should be doing instead?
I am anxious to get started with this pattern as I’m a bit of a slow knitter and my baby is due in less than 3 months!

If you work a knit 2 rows, purl one row, your pattern should appear. When you work the square, though, the odd numbered rows are the ws rows. Since it is worked for 20 rows, you should end up with enough rows for the ridges. :think:

My garter stitch ridges (sorry…bad terminology) are really wide. Opposite of the photo. So maybe it’s just me.

Okay, so the first knit row should give me the garter stitch ridge, and then the next knit row/purl row should give me the stockinette right? Why is this not working for me? lol

Just continue to k2 row, purl 1 row - the side with the one purl ridge between stockinette is the RS row. You might be looking at it on the wrong side.

I think I’m giving up and leaving it the way it is. I’ve knitted all 20 rows many times over and neither side looks like the picture. I ended up with a wide garter stitch band.

you knit 1 row. just by itself.
then you knit the next: a [B]garter stitch [/B]rib appears. 2 knit rows just do that.

then you purl one row (row no.3 that is)

this makes a smooth row in stochinette stitch.

now you knit another row (no4)
that forms more stochinette stitch with the purl row.

then you knit again… that makes a [B]garter stitch [/B]rib. (no5)

a purl row: st st (no 6)

a knit row: st st (no7)

a knit row: [B]garter stitch [/B](no 8)

a purl row: st st (no 9)

so within those 9 rows you now have 3 ridges popping up.

if you work just like this, it will all come out.

When you are getting larger sections… are you working 1 row until you turn your needles? Some people have the missconception that 1 row ends where it begins (that is 2 rows, though).

Ok, I’m going to take a stab at this one. The pattern looks adorable, but I wonder whether some of the instructions don’t account for the way you work the odd rows right to left, but the even rows left to right. Anyway, here goes:

Pattern is knit a row, knit a row, purl a row.

Row 1 (odd =right side) knit, looks like vvvvvvvvvv
Row 2 (even=wrong side) knit, looks like ~~~~~~~~~~
Row 3 (odd =right side) purl, looks like ~~~~~~~~~~[/FONT]

Now we repeat (knit a row, knit a row, purl a row), but we are starting on an even row (wrong side):
[FONT=“Courier New”]
Row 4 (even=wrong side) knit, looks like ~~~~~~~~~~
Row 5 (odd =right side) knit, looks like vvvvvvvvvv
Row 6 (even=wrong side) purl, looks like vvvvvvvvvv [/FONT]

(It’s almost more like a 6-row pattern than a 3-row pattern.)

So that means after 20 rows it looks like this:

Row 1 (odd =right side) knit, looks like vvvvvvvvvv
Row 2 (even=wrong side) knit, looks like ~~~~~~~~~~
Row 3 (odd =right side) purl, looks like ~~~~~~~~~~

Is this what your squares look like? You describe fat bands that only fit 3 times in the square.

Ok, to fix it, you want two rows that LOOK like “knit” (that is, look like vvvvvv"), then one row that LOOKS like “purl” (~~~~~~), etc. So how about this, instead:
[FONT=“Courier New”]
Row 1 (odd =right side) knit, looks like vvvvvvvvvv
Row 2 (even=wrong side) knit, looks like ~~~~~~~~~~
Row 3 (odd =right side) knit, looks like vvvvvvvvvv
Row 4 (even=wrong side) purl, looks like vvvvvvvvvv
Row 5 (odd =right side) purl, looks like ~~~~~~~~~~

knit 3 rows, purl 3 rows!

I came to my senses last night.
My appologies!

Looking at the blanket again:

you knit 2 rows, purl one, knit 1, THEN you repeat: k2 p1 k1 row.

That means you have a repeat of 4 rows, not 3.

Sorry, I was off, since lately I made something with ribs around, but I was working in the round and there it would not matter.

Anyways:

row 1: knit
row 2: knit
row 3: purl
row 4: knit

then do those rows (1-4) over and over.

No, you were right in the first place, it is a 3 row repeat -
Knit 2 rows
Purl 1 row
Repeat until finished

Though the pattern could be wrong…

Okay I checked, the only mistake was in the white squares, and that’s been corrected.

AniseRN, that is exactly how my rows were looking. I did it over and over, thinking I was crazy and it came out just that way! Many thanks for taking the time to type that out. LOL

I’ve started another blanket, but really do want to make this one for my little one due in April, so I’m going to try it your way this weekend! :cheering:

I saw that it says: 3 rows.
but really, what I see in the pics there is stochinette stitch with every second wrong side row knit instead of purl.

I think, there is a mistake there, too.

I also think that the instructions are not really clear for all the squares… she puts “knit” and “purl” for the colors, and she adds “on RS” but maybe it would be really helpful to say:

knit on RS, purl on WS for the white squares
and purl on RS, knit on WS for the gray ones?

that is much easier then.

the one mistake she had and corrected was the same thing, I see here: she had forgotten a WS row. If you enter that one row, you are right where the pics show:

3 lines of "v"s in between the bumpy line. (you can click on the pic in the blog to enlarge the pic)

I looked it up on ravelry to see if there were mistakes and only the white square was mentioned. No one said anything about the green one.

In the comments on Ravelry a couple people mentioned the same issue I was having (I’m also in the comments. :slight_smile: ). I also noticed in some of the projects, a lot of users have the thick “ridges” like I was getting. Maybe they gave up too. LOL

One user frogged her whole blanket because she said many of the instructions were “off”…

I really like this blanket, so I hope I can pull this off.

Hmm, that’s what I was looking for, but didn’t look closely enough maybe. Maybe if you do it as the 4 row repeat that will look more like the pictures.

I worte a message to the pattern maker. Since she links her ravelry page that was pretty easy.
I also did include the link to this discussion.
I will let you know if / when I get an answer or maybe she will log in and tell us right of.
I really want to know now. (still sticking with my idea about the 4 row repeat, but anything is possible, really)

Hi!
That email on Ravelry was worth it. I got a very nice mail back from “jupe”. She confirms that the correct repeat is

so maybe that will help when you go about the blanket again.
If you have further questions, I guess writing to her in person will be the best idea. She is closest to the ideas behind the pattern.
