I thought I had made good progress on my first sock, (Scrunch sock, from ‘The Ultimate Book Of Knit Socks’ Published by Annie’s Attic’.
All was going well, my rib stitch looked good no yucky ladders. I’ve started on the heel and got to row 21 and now I’m stuck. it says;
ROW 21; To TURN HEEL, slip 1, K12, skp, K1, leaving last 8 sts unworked, turn. (23 st on needle)

I’ve worked up to my last 8 sts but I don’t have 23 sts on the needle, I have 15. Am I supposed slip the 8 unworked sts onto my needle?
Should I have put the other rows onto sts holders when I started working the heel?
I’m so confused and upset, I worked so hard to get the sock to come out nice and now I haven’t a clue what I’m doing. Here’s hoping someone can help me.
Ok so when you count your sts are you just counting the ones you work to get the #15? or does that include the 8sts that you didn’t do anything to? The total # of sts which is 23 should include the sts you worked and the 8 left undone… I don’t have that pattern so I’m just counting on it being the most common heel flap… the next row should be a Purl row and it should have a decrease in it as well… you will continue to decrease on a knit and then purl row until you reach the final # of sts they give you…
As far as the last rows you worked and your not doing anything to that is your instep…Not sure which way you are knitting your socks but if it’s on dpns…I take it you now have it split on 2 different dpns? This is fine and you can leave it like that unless it is a bit annoying to you… which I find it can be… I usually combine those sts onto one dpn one less dpn I have to worry about… once you finish the heel flap you can divide them up again but I usually just leave them on that one dpn…I like to use 3 dpns to hold my sts and knit with the 4th…
If your doing Magic Loop the other sts are fine hanging on the other needle… I haven’t had trouble keeping them there… I just finished my 2nd pair on ML and I know they say to put the sts on stitch holders but I didn’t :teehee:…didn’t run into any problems…if it would make you more comfy then you could move them…
I hope this helps…I know you had such trouble with the ribbing…don’t give up…I’m not the best at explaining so I hope this makes sense
I’m just counting the ‘Done’ stitches, if I include the ‘Not done’ stitches it adds up but it says ‘on the needle’ but it’s over 2 needles, is that right? Do I just purl my way back the other side?
:wall: :waah: I’m too thick to knit socks! :waah:
P.S, I’m working with DPN’s, finally got the nack!
I’m not sure why it says one needle…when you first start all the heel sts are on one but then the heel turn you are working on 2dpns as you turn…till all the sts are worked…:teehee:
Now I’ve got to pick up knit:thud:, this sock knitting game is hard work!
My Dad stayed with me last night and asked what I was knitting, when I replied ‘a sock’ he said it looks like a ‘Wind Sock’. I’m using worsted yarn and it’s going to be a nice warm sock, all be it a bit big!
I’m reading and re reading the instruction, I’m not sure what I’m getting wrong. I just can’t seem to ‘pick up and knit’. It uses up all my needles. When it says ‘spare’ needle, does it mean the one from the set or another needle so I have 5?
I’ve been stuck on this since Friday, I can’t seem to get the stitches even then all my needles are used up, how am I supposed to knit around?
That’s after I discovered, when you ‘Pick up and knit’ you don’t actually ‘knit’ the stitch. Why say it then! No wonder us newbies get so confused.
With Picking up the Gusset it really comes down to what is most comfy for you…:happydance:
This is what I do on a basic sock pattern… I have my heel on one needle… I have my instep on another needle… this is what my sock looks like before I pick up the Gusset…
Now with the needle I have the heel sts on I start down the side and Pick up the number of sts I need…so now on Needle 1 I have my heel sts and my first Gusset… I knit across Needle 2 in the Instep pattern… Now with my 3rd needle I pick up the Gusset Sts once I have done this with Needle 3 I also Knit half of my heel sts off Needle 1… So needle 1 and 3 meet in the center of the heel this marks the start of my new round…
Needle 1~ Half of heel and Gusset Sts
Needle 2~ Instep Sts
Needle 3~ Gusset Sts and other half of heel sts…
If you are using all 5 of your dpns then you may have your instep on Needle 2 and 3…with the Gusset Sts and other half of heel sts on Needle 4…
Now some when picking up sts can find holes…some are ok with this…some this bothers…your first sock I wouldn’t worry about it… but one thing I try to do is make sure one of the sts I pick up kinda closes the gap of where I left the instep to make the heel…
Hereis also Silver’s Sock class…looking at the pictures might help you with Gusset too…She prolly explains it better than me too :teehee:
