Hood on sweater

I’m having trouble with doing a hood on a sweater. Directions call for a circular needle with directions as follows: Cast on 6 sts on circular needle, with same needle starting at center front, k10sts from holder, pick up and k16sts. on right front neck to shoulder, k the 36 sts from holder at back of neck increasing 1st at center back, pick up and k16sts on left front neck edge, k remaining 10sts from front holder, cast on 6 sts.I get lost after working on right front neck. When I pick up the 16sts from the back which side should I start with? Can someone help with a more detailed way to do this? Thanks

What you want to end up with is a continuous line of stitches from the first ones you cast on to the last ones you cast on.

Cast on 6,
then knit the 10 stitches that are on the left side of the center,

pick up 16 stitches between there and the shoulder,

then knit across the 32 stitches that are on the holder for the back of the neck,

pick up 16 stitches between there and the 10 on the other holder

knit the 10 on the holder

and cast on 6 more.
