Hi, Barbara here (again). I am struggling with a pattern when it comes to decreasing.

The patt says Continue in Patti’s set throughout dec 1st at end of next (5th.next 3rd.3rd) row rhen at end of following -which I understand. I just need to know about the first, if indeed there is a first decrease. Thanks

What is the name of your pattern and designer, and which size are you making?

For the first size for example, you’re to decrease 1 stitch at the end of next row and then at the end of the following…
For the second size, it’s 1 stitch at the end of the 5th row (counting from the next row) and then at the end of the following…

It can be easy to read “1st” as “first”, rather than “one stitch”. Designers usually try to avoid using the abbreviated form of “first” for this reason.

Hi, the pattern is Bambino 9499. I am doing the left front and followed the 6 row pattern, the third row begins with K2tog. It’s when I come to decrease I get confused. I started with 27sts and after the 6 rows have 26sts. The pattern then reads as follows:-
‘Last 6 rows for patt with st st side border, 9 st lace patt and 1 st front edge border.
Continue in patt as set throughout dec 1 st at start of next (5th.next3rd.3rd) row, then at start of following 4th row 2 times, then at start of the following 6th row 2 times. 21 sts’
I am doing the 1st size cardigan. Which has a decrease on row 3.
I hope this makes sense now, although not to me! Thanks

Continue to repeat the 6 row pattern. Call the next row, row 1. You will be decreasing on rows 1,5,9 then rows 15 and 21. Don’t work the decrease on row 3 but work the decreases on these new rows.
You’ll need to keep count of the pattern rows and the continuous row numbers so it may help to write out the row numbers 1-21 in a column and in a second column write out the repeating pattern rows 1-6.
It looks like the decreases all occur in the stockinette section at the side border and not as part of the lace pattern. You can probably work the decreases one stitch in from the side edge in order to make it easier to seam. If the decreases extend into the lace pattern, let us know.

Will do and Thankyou
