Hem question

I’m waiting for my yarn to start my Hourglass Sweater.

I’m trying to stay focused (not easy) & work on the best technique for doing the hem. I planned on using the hem technique from Nothin’ but my t-shirt on pattern–ktog C.O with facing side of sweater. But I can’t seem to line up the stitches? Would I need to mark every c.o stich to make sure the stitches line up.

The only other solution is to do provisional cast on, pull out yarn to reveal c.o stiches, place them on the needle and do a 3 ring bind off. Does this sound like a solid plan? Or is it more work?

What’s the best way to make sure the stitches line up?

Thanks,
knitbebe

I used Marnie’s no-sew hem technique for the bottom of mine: http://marniemaclean.com/words/2005/01/no-sew-hem.html. I think that is the second option you mentioned. It looks like the t-shirt pattern method would work too, but I agree it would be hard to line up. Maybe if you decide to do that you could somehow mark every ten stitches or something to make sure you’re on track?

The no-sew hem worked great for me on the body, but I’m having a hard time making it work on the small circumference of the sleeves. BTW, I used this provisional cast on method (because I couldn’t really figure out Amy’s video  ): http://www.knittingatknoon.com/provisional.html Good luck!

AHHH!! I’m scared. I’m working on the same sweater, it’s my first, and I had seen this hem thing, but I figured I would just go for it when I got there. Is it tough?! I just started my first sleeve, so I’m a long way off.

Okay, so in panic mode I read the directions for finishing…just to let you guys know…I am definitely going to need some help when I get there!!

 Don’t worry–we’ll all be in the same boat! I think that the neck will be the hardest to hem. If you just follow the pattern as written, you don’t have to do any funny cast ons or anything, you just sew up the hems at the end. I was trying to avoid that finishing part by doing the no-sew hem at the beginning. It’ll work no matter which way you choose!

yikes! i guess i’ll just attempt it when i get there, and enjoying knitting the rest of it until then! what yarn did you guys use? i definitely couldn’t afford the Noro Cash Iroha, so I went with the Andean Silk in orange from KP, and I’m really liking it…super soft! I love anything orange!!

I’m using Debbie Bliss Cathay because I don’t need any wool sweaters. I’ve heard the andean silk works well for this sweater. Can’t wait to see yours! :cheering:

yipee! I think we have a hourglass knitalong!

I just got my yarn today. I originally had Debbie Bliss (wool/cotton), but the gauge didn’t work out. My new yarn is cascade Pima Melange (100% cotton) denim. The gauge seems to working out fine. And I love the denim color–it’s a great heathered blue.

The andean silk in orange is a great yarn for this sweater. Mer, is cathay a cotton?

I have worked up 4 swatches for that blasted hem–& it gets better as far lining up the stitches–but it’s a little scary to think I have to work that closely around 194 stitches! So, am seroiusly thinking about just hemming after I finish the sweater. Since, I just cast on tonight I have a little time to think about it.

Mer–did you use the Nothin but my t-shirt hem? or have gotten that far?

 Hourglass Sweater !

I thought if I started a subject line for hourglass under knitalong we could help each other more easily!

I don’t think I saw one yet, I’ll double check.

:happydance:

I used the no-sew hem (with provisional cast on) for the bottom, but I’m doing the sleeves as written. Good idea to start a KAL! I’ll head on over to look…
