Helpful info for "Tempting" pattern

Can anyone please help me figure this out? This is the pattern I’m using: http://knitty.com/issuewinter04/patttempting.html

I’m stuck on the part under “Body,” where it says: Place next 12 sts on waste yarn, work across 60 sts, place next 12 sts on waste yarn, work to end of rnd.

After placing the 12 sts on waste yarn, if I continue to work the next 60 sts, the working yarn inevitably pulls across the gap created by “skipping” those 12 sts (hope that made sense). That length of yarn going across also creates another problem later in the pattern, when trying to join the sleeves to the body of the sweater. I’m obviously doing something wrong, but I can’t make it work no matter what I try. :??

Please help…I’m about ready to tear my hair out! :crying:

I see what you mean, and I don’t understand it either. I would think that when you move the working yarn behind those slipped stitches, just give enough slack so that it doesn’t pull. And… maybe that length of yarn is functional… it would keep the underarms from stretching too much since the body is knit in a ribbed pattern.

I dunno… I haven’t made this sweater, although I plan to. Hopefully someone will come along that HAS knit it. :slight_smile:

Here’s my take on it. She does not want you to break the yarn, so when you ‘carry’ the yarn over those placed on the contrasting yarn, be generous. You don’t want things to look pulled or tight.

She doesn’t address those hanging bits of yarn anywhere else in the pattern, but it sounds like after the sleeves are joined to the body, these can be dealt with. They will be in the armpit area, so could be cut at a midpoint and worked in there.

That’s what I’m hoping, too. I also sent an email to the author of the pattern, so if I hear back from her, I’ll be sure to post the solution. I’d hate to be this close to finishing a project and then not being able to. :frowning:

Thanks for the link! I’m working on Tempting now, but I’ve only complete an inch or two of ribbing. This will definitely come in handy when I get farther along.

Here’s my related question…why use waste yarn? Wouldn’t a stitch holder serve the same purpose, or am I missing something?

I think it’s basically a matter of preference…so either waste yarn or actual stitch holders would accomplish the same thing. I actually don’t even own stitch holders…I always just use bits of yarn I have left over from previous projects, and it works great. :thumbsup:
