I know how to crochet, but I like the look of knitting better so I decided to give it a shot. I’ve been watching the videos on this site, and even though I think I’m following them exactly, my “knitting” looks more like crocheting! It’s not sloppy or uneven - it just doesn’t have the “v”-like pattern I’m seeing on the videos and is more separated like something that is crocheted. Can anyone help?

I’m another crocheter who has recently learned to knit. The V look that you’re after is the result of knitting one row and purling the next and continuing this alternation of knit one row, purl one row, etc.
This pattern is called “Stockinette stitch” in the United States; “Stocking stitch” in the U.K.
You might be working all knit stitch? If so, and you’re working on straight needles, you’re creating what’s called “garter stitch,” and yes–no V look.
So add those rows of purl stitches and see if things don’t look more like you were expecting.

I did this, too, when I first learned how to knit. I was doing all garter and couldn’t understand why mine didn’t look like the stockinette stitch that my teacher did. I spent many hours trying to recreate what she did to no avail until I figured it out. You’ll do fine. Don’t expect perfect results right away. It takes practice. Practice the mechanics of knitting at first until it becomes natural to you. Then after you get that down, worry about neatening it up and working on your tension. If you want a quick and easy project, a pot holder or scarf is an easy way to practice. Don’t despair. You can always rip it out and start over. We more experienced knitters still do it.

It may help to know that the back side of a knit st looks like a purl and the back of a purl looks like a knit. So it’s really just one stitch, you just work them differently depending on which side you’re on and is facing you and what look you want, stockinette or garter stitch. The Tips page shows a few Basic Stitches videos that inculde ribbing and seed st as well. It’s a good idea to learn which is which so you can read your knitting; that’ll let you become a better knitter faster.
