I’m knitting a child’s sweater and see a tricky part coming up. It reads, “Bind off at beginning of row (7 sts) twice, then (7sts) twice.”
I don’t know what this means. Why doesn’t it just say to bind off 28 stitches?

You want to stagger the BOs so the edges are graduated. If you did them all at once you’d have a one, long indentation.

To further help clarify - you want to bind off 7 stitches and then knit to the end of the row. Flip it over to start the next row, bind off 7 stitches and then knit (or purl) to the end of the row. Now you’ve done the first 2 bind off rows.
They then want you to do the same thing again so flip it around to start your 3rd row and bind off 7 stitches and then knit to the end of the row. Flip it over, bind off 7 stitches and then knit (or purl) to the end of the row.
I think I get what you’re saying . . . my only confusion now is, if I bind off stitches, then knit to the end of the row, do I begin knitting with a new ball of yarn? Binding off would imply doing so, wouldn’t it?
Hiya Deb,
Nah you wouldn’t have to join a new piece of yarn. You bind off at the beginning of the row, don’t cut any yarn and continue knitting the rest of the row, turn, and bind off on the wrong side for the other sleeve inset. Then just continue as the pattern tells you too:thumbsup:
No, binding off only means you are casting off so many stitches to shape shoulders or something like shoulders. You’ll still have stiches on your needles to knit with.
No, you wouldn’t need to add a new ball of yarn - you haven’t cut the one you’re using.
Well, unless you happen to get to the end of your yarn during the 4 rows.
How many total stiches did you have before you start binding off?
49 stitches before bind off.
Since you’re not binding off ALL the sts as you would be at then end of a piece, you don’t cut the yarn, but continue knitting with it.
