Help!!!

Hi everyone,

I’m fairly new to knitting and I’m attempting a pair of socks. But I’m at the dividing heel stage on straight needles and I don’t understand!

I’ve attached the pattern for reference. I have my 10sts on right needle 19 on a stitch holder and remaining 10 on a spare needle. It’s the next part I’m stuck with. This is what I’m staring at and not understanding. Any help will be appreciated before I throw it in the bin :joy:

Welcome to KH!
This is very adventurous to work on socks but a good place to start.
Turn so that the RS (right side) the knit stitch side in this case is facing you. Attach the strand of yarn at the green circle in the photo and knit across the sts marked with the yellow arrow (these sts will be on the left hand needle once you turn to the RS). Then continue knitting the sts on the second needle in the directions shown by the red arrow. Don’t leave a gap between needles. These are going to be your heel sts.

To attach the yarn, simply hold it next to the left needle with your left hand. It’ll be a bit loose but you can always snug it up by pulling on the yarn end. Leave about 6inches of yarn end to weave in later.
Enjoy working the socks and do post a photo when you finish. We love to see projects.

Thank you so much. I’ll give this a go when I put the little one to bed and post a picture and you can tell me if what I’ve done is right! I’ve only made a baby cardigan so far but this one is hurting my head!

In some ways it’s easier to work socks in the round but however you choose to get started, it’s good to jump in and give it a try. Once you see the moving parts, the second sock is easier to work and so is the next pair. One warning, they can be very addictive!

I am finishing my second pair of socks. ( it takes me awhile to finish a project cause I might not get a lot of time each day to work on it, raising a granddaughter takes a lot of my time) I didn’t know about working them flat with a heel structure. Actually did do tube sock first and that was worked flat. But I use dpn’s and actually like using them. But between tube sock and before transitioning to regular socks I made a couple of hats working in the round. And then the first pair I did on dpn, I worked using a step by step video tutorial. I’ve got my next sock project ready to go when I get these last few rows completed and do toe. Next time trying toe up socks, so I can learn something new (Judy’s magic loop cast on and a different heel). Anyway that has been my journey with socks. Good luck on your journey!

KnittinGigi, can you recommend the video tutorial that you used? I know Kristin Bell’s series.

I ordered “crazy sock lady vanilla socks on dpn” from Ravelry (only $2). Then there is a crazy sock lady tutorial “how to knit socks on dpn” that follows that pattern on you tube. I hope that helps.

Knittinggigi I think I’m going to look into some tutorials on circular needles. I’ve knitted on and off for years but only with my auntie telling me what to do and she only ever uses straight needles. I’ll have to try the next step tomorrow as my little one was a sausage going to bed! But thank you all for the advice and I’ll keep you posted
