HELP WITH YRN AND YON

Hi can anyone help. i am doing a James Brett pattern for a baby bonnet. the pattern says YRN P1 P3 TOG P1 YON K1.

The YRN i assume is to make a stitch but what is the difference to YON is that to make a stitch as well. When i have knitted this i end up with too many stitches.

The YRN is at the beginning for i have been wrappting yarn around the needle to P the next stitch. The YON comes before a K1 so i Have just been laying it over.

Help please baby due in 6 weeks, need this bonnet done.

You’ve been doing the right thing. Both of these create a stitch and make and eyelet or hole in the knit fabric.
The use of yo or yon or yrn (also yf and yfwd) depends on the stitch before and the stitch after the yarn over. Here’s a video for the different abbreviations.
