Help with YO K2TOG and YO P2TOG

Hi all,

Hope some of you can help, and I hope I can explain my probelm. I seem to be having a major problem with my YO and K2TOG and YO and P2TOG. I started out with 68 stiches and have been gradually increasing as I go. I’m making a poncho, and so far have had to start over 3 times. Is there a trick to doing YO. I get how to do the K2TOG and P2TOG, but when I follow the instructions for the YO I seem to be getting a gigantic mess. The stiches all look like they are crossing each other.

Also, my yarn has no stretch or give to it, which seems to be adding to my problem. Everything seems to be too tight. Any hints.

It is possible that you’re knitting too tightly and this is causing the yo’s to overlap the other stitches. When you first do them, they can easily look like they’re overlapping. On the next row, though, if you make a point to work the yo stitch in it’s correct order, you can should be able to sort them out, get them lined up again and have the hole where it should be. Have you tried knitting on larger needles to loosten up the stitches a little bit?

Thanks Ingrid! I think I will try larger needles. I also just found one of the videos for the P2TOG and lo and behold, I now know how do do that. I “thought” I was doing it correctly, and noticed that I was “pushing” the needle thru the 2, but wasn’t “pulling” the 2 thru, if you can understand that. I have some left over yarn that I use for practice, and even though I want to get back to the poncho i will practive a bit more first.

Good idea! Hope it works for you.

I’m so glad this topic is already posted. I’m venturing out on my first baby cardigan and have come across this: YO, p2tog. I don’t know why but I cannot get this to work.

How can I YO when my yarn is already in front for the purl? Do I go back around my right needle again with it for the YO and then do the p2tog? I am just not getting it. And this pattern said it was easy! If anyone can explain it to me ( in the way you’d explain it to a 5 year old ) or knows of a demo I can look at, it would be very much appreciated.

Are you doing p, yo, p2og?

Take the yarn back over the top of the right needle and then bring it around between the stitches to the front again to purl the next stitch.

Thanks, Ingrid. I figured it out last night after a few feeble attempts.
