I am trying to order yarn for my cardigan (Sona Celtic Cable Cardigan #JolieSylvie). I can’t contact the designer as her Ravelry link is down. There two strands “WI Soft & Smooth Premium DK” and “Stylecraft Senses Lace Mohair”. I am not using these yarns, but I am trying to figure our how much yardage is required so I can order it in the yarn I want to use… I tried using Yarn Substitution to get the details but not much help there. WI Soft & Smooth is discontinued (big surprise) and I have a Lace Yarn I want to use. I am thinking to use Large (100 cm/ 39") as this is the finished size. The pattern is not real clear on how much yarn to use… Usually they give you yardage for each size… Doesn’t appear that way with this. Yardage only shows 500-700 g (1250-1750m). I am leaning to the 1750 meters which is 1914 yards. Seeing as there is cabling, that makes more sense. Any ideas?
Help with Yarn Yardage
I think you’re right to go with the top of the range for yarn. It’s better to have extra than not enough.
Have you purchased the pattern yet? Designers sometimes list only a range on the details page but the actual pattern has yardage for all the sizes.
The WI yarn listed is rheumatologist premium acrylic rather than the soft and smooth, it’s still available to buy although I don’t think you ant it
100g is 250m so if your pattern has a number of balls for your size you can work out the total from that.
Based on the size range and you choose L it’s about midway so I’d expect 1500m
There’s 2 balls difference between the S and the XXL.
As always though, better to have an extra ball and make some matching mitts or cowl with the remainder than run out and be hunting down a particular dye lot. You cant really go wrong if you get 1750m but if the yarn you’ve chosen come in 50g or 100g balls, and if it’s pricey, maybe go for 1600 or 1650m.
Take into account if you are likely to want a longer sleeve or longer nody as that will need extra.
I have the pattern and no there isn’t any further breakdown of the yardage…🫤
The pattern clearly says Soft & Smooth, I cut and pasted it from the pattern so I wouldn’t misspell it. Unless you mean the link you are sending. If so my apologies … My Berroco Vintage DK has 290 yds per skein, so I’ll need 6. I always buy extra as I need extra in the waste and arm length… It also calls for a lace yarn that is knitted together. I just did one like that for my grand niece. Thanks so much for the info. It is so very much appreciated…
I was referring to the text on the ravelry page which has it listed as premium acrylic.
Perhaps an error on ravelry? Or an error in the pattern?
Who knows… I do know it was very kind of you to look it up…
Well it definitely doesn’t say this on ravelry! My stupid auto-incorrect.
People worry about AI taking over but even the auto text can’t manage to make sense.
I typed premium acrylic, nothing about any rheumatologist! Ha ha.
Sorry about the added confusion.
It sounds like you have resolved the question of how much yarn is needed, which is great.
It’s a lovely cardigan.
