Help with V neckband

I’m struggling with these instructions and can’t find a video anywhere
Insert needle purlways through back of 2nd st then 1st st and slip both sts off needle tog, purl next then pass 2 slipped sts tog over purl st

Is there a name or abbreviation of stitch. I think I possibly have done one similar. :yarn:

Welcome to the forum!
What is the name and designer of your pattern?

This video shows placing the right needle into the back of the 2nd stitch. But it’s a video for making a twist stitch, not the decrease that you’re instructions indicate. So the only help it offers it working the needle into the back of the 2nd stitch (see about 1:30min).

After you insert the needle into the back of the 2nd stitch, twist the point of the right needle around so that you can insert into the 1st stitch and slip both off the left needle together. Purl the next stitch and pass the slipped sts together over the purl stitch.
I’ll give it a try and see if there’s an easier way to work this.

It’s inserted purlwise into the second stitch so the needle point will already be pointing right towards the first stitch to slip that purlwise also.

It helps a bit to be a loose knitter and even then it’s not easy to work this stitch. What may help is changing it slightly to work it in a manner similar to cabling without a cable needle. Not perfect but perhaps close.
I started with the yarn in back, slipped the right needle into the back of the 2nd stitch and withdrew the left needle from the 1st and 2nd stitches (the first stitch will be hanging free while the 2nd stitch is on the right needle). Re-insert the left needle into that free hanging 1st stitch and slip it to the right needle purlwise. Now bring the yarn to the front between the needles, purl the next stitch and slip the 2 slip sts on the right needle over the purl stitch.
It’s not precisely the same as your directions but at least your hands aren’t saying, “Ouch!” Give it a try on some waste yarn and see if it will work with your pattern.
Here’s a video for cabling without a cable needle that at least shows you the idea of slipping the left needle out of the sts then reinserting it. (see about 6:00min).

Thanks that’s really helpful, I’ll try it out on a sample bit of knitting.

Let us know how it goes. If it’s not working maybe we can figure out another way to go at it.

What pattern is this from? I just tried it as described. It worked as a left leaning double decrease for me. This video shows the needle insertion as I did it but instead of purling I slipped them to the right needle. I held the two stitches on the right needle, purled the next, then passed the slipped stitches over it. As described I see it as s2p,p,psso, the reverse of s2kp. I am including the abbreviated form because someone smarter than I can assess my take on this. I might be totally wrong. Knowing where and how it’s used would be a huge help.

ETA Is this at the bottom of the V of the neck?

That may well be the easiest way to work this. I agree, seeing the pattern will help

Thanks for all your help, going to crack on with some knitting this afternoon.
FYI it’s a SIRDAR pattern for a v-neck tank top (10113) I’m on the neckband and it’s bottom of the V

GG’s video shows you just how to work this. Much easier than my maneuvering!

Luckily I’ve never had to do this decrease. I consider it cruel and inhuman. I think what shows in the photo I found on your link is a cdd in purl but my interpretation of it created a left leaning decrease. I’m confused.

This is an easier way to work it from the terrific Suzanne Bryan giving a centered double decrease rather than a left or right leaning decrease.
It’s worked on the purl sided to give a nice finish on the knit side.
