Hi (again!). So am really enjoying knitting Ella Austin’s Pinwheel Mitts. I am understanding and progressing well however (!), I am confused: I have started the chartwork for Thumb Gusset, so am on the very first line, which incorporates the Pinwheel Chart AND the Gusset Chart,so far so good. I have 66 stitches on the needle (doing magic loop method). First round: have completed the 8 repeats of the pinwheel chart (64 stitches), Knit 1 stitch as instructed, which leaves 1 stitch on the LH needle point then my problems start:
I have one stitch left and am expected to do first a LLI, (left lift increase) then a RLI (right lift increase) So, I know they are increases, but when I tackle the last remaining stitch in order to increase, it is immediately transferred to the RH needle, so where is the opportunity to then RLI (and as mentioned before I only had one remaining stitch anyhows as I understand my stitch count?).
I hope I am explaining well enough. Any help is very much appreciated, I am loving making these.
Hi
Hopefully a more experienced knitter will be along to give clear advice on this… in the meanwhile… I believe this type of increase does not use up a stitch. They are lifted from the row (or 2) below and added to the needle. I am not 100% about which way is right or left on this (maybe you know that part?) but one is lifted from 2 rows below on the right needle, no stitch used up but one made, and the other is lifted from 1 row below on the left needle, no stitch used.
I believe you should be able to make both these increases without using up your remaining stitch.
This might not be the best help but I just thought if you are sat glaring at it (as I would be) then this might be enough to help you past your confusion.
It looks like these increases occur at the columns of main color (maybe these are called side stitches?). Are they perhaps at the beginning of round marker as well? I’m wondering if one is worked in the stitch before the marker and one in the stitch after the marker? It’s unlikely that they would both be worked in the same stitch.
Ooh, thank you, I think you are probably on the right lines. I have been you tubeing how to LLI/RLI and some are much better explained than others, but I seem to remember that one does go deep under the stitch. I shall attempt again, feel better now and quite rightly, had rather been glaring at it!! Thanks again!
Thank you Salmonmac, I now feel I can attempt armed with the new info. From what I see on You Tube, you are correct, they are worked, stitch before and after depending on whether right or left increase. Hopefully will not need to post again, but eternally grateful you (and others) answer my questions!
One more post please, with a photo of your finished mitts!
The second photo down in this project just shows the very pretty split of the 2 main color columns at the thumb gusset. That’s a very neat design.

I will!
Salmonmac, I have practised the LLI as this is the first (RLI comes next in the pattern chart). What I don’t understand, that I can LLI with the last remaining stitch by knitting the stitch, and taking the left hand stitch 2 ‘rows’ below, but it still ends up on the right handed needle, so infact the increase ends up on the right handed needle?
So, I ‘understand’, but only to a point. If it was a RLI, I think i would still have a stitch on the RH needle? Am I making any sense?
These increases and the stitch or column they are worked into do end up on the right hand needle. That’s correct.
Here’s the video that I’ve used. I like these increases. See about 3:30 min for the left and right lifted increases.
The right lifted increase is into the back (or right leg) of the stitch below the next stitch on the left needle. For the left lifted increase, knit the stitch onto the right hand needle then work into the back (or left leg) of the stitch 2 rows below.
This is also a clear video.
So if I do that for the LLI, I don’t have a stitch left to work on for the RLI which is next on the chart to do…
Are you working at those two main color columns of sts when you work the increases?
Where is your beginning of round marker in relation to those two columns?
See red dots on photo above.
SUCCESS! Suddenly realised, where the first increase was the LLI, I should have increased from second to last stitch, enabling me to access the left hand bar! That’s what the confusion seemed to be all along , duh! This meant that I could do the RLI on the 66th stitch, enabling me to follow to the conclusion!
Thank you, thank you. Your patience and help is/was beyond generous!
Deelighted with your success!
I was just about to post with this, the 2nd to last stitch, lifting an increase without knitting a stitch first.
I am soooooo glad you got it! Its a great feeling to suddenly have that aha moment isn’t it?
Super pleased for you and by the way these gloves look super hard you are brave and talented to achieve such intricate colour work.
Thank-you! You are spot on, it was definitely worth the angst, it made the aha moment that much sweeter!
It is a little more challenging because it’s a fine yarn, and one of the colours am using is quite a dark grey!
Nice chatting ![]()
Hi there! You asked me to send you a picture once completed (see below!). So pleased with them! Thanks for ALL your help
Francesca
Those are superb fingerless mitts! You’ve worked the pattern so neatly and beautifully. Very well done. I’m sure they will garner many well-deserved compliments.
Wow! Fabulous!
Well, definitely aided and abetted by yourself! Tbh, am very pleased, sadly one last issue, hence email re dropped stitch
How did that happen?!
Has obviously happened to at least one other, as you have posted a link on the issue
.
Thank you
Francesca
Happened to me and more than once. I call it experience.
Yes, and it’s so satisfying to learn how to correct errors.
