Help with the pattern please

I am knitting fingerless gloves. The pattern is called Little Shell Fingerless Gloves and is a free pattern on Ravelry. I am having trouble understanding what to do at the beginning if the thumb part. Pattern says…
Round 31: (knit across all stitches on needle 1) K2, *YO, P1, P3TOG, P1, YO, K2, repeat from * to end of needle 2. (Needle 3: Knit 2 stitches and then use scrap yarn to knit across 6 stitches. Turn work and purl back across the previous 6 stitches that were knit with the scrap yarn. Turn work again – right side should be facing you. Pick up working yarn and knit back across the stitches as well as the two remaining stitches on the needle.) (Afterthought thumb has been placed)

When I am using scrap yarn and knitting across 6 stitches, are the stitches on or off the needles? If they are on the needles then should have a knit and purl row (of 6 stitches) that that are on the needle but not knitted with my working yarn until I have turn back to right side, picked up the working yarn and carried on. I just cant visualize what this is going to look like so thought i would check before proceeding. Thanks so much.

The thumb sts are always on the needle. Here’s a video that shows you what this looks like. The thumb starts a little before 2:00min.
