Help With Tail

Hello all!

I am a beginning knitter learning the American method. After casting-on, when creating my first row, I have a lot of troubles with the tail. It seems to get tangled up in my stitch, and, although I try to keep it out of the way, it always finds a way to end up in my stitch, thus, ruining it. I was wondering if the tail is a common problem, or, if there is something blatantly wrong with my casting-on which is allowing for this to happen.

I begin to cast on with a slip knot, then, opening up the yarn with my thumb and index finger, pull it down, creating a loop around my thumb. Then, I stick my needle through the loops surrounding both my thumb and index finger.

I’m using size 8 needles, and your standard, plain yarn.

Any help/encouraging words are appreciated. Thanks!

I’ve often knitted with the tail instead of my yarn, too. You can cut it so it’s only about 3 inches long. I don’t think there’s any trick, but it does get better. The more you knit, the farther away it is.

Thank you!
