Help with sweater, part III

Hi again,

Thanks to all who helped me with my sleeve issue. I completed them and I think they are OK. I am now up to my final big step and I’m utterly confused.

I have 21 stitches on each side on stitch holders, which will make up the front of the sweater, the sleeves are done, and then I have 39 stitches in the middle on a stitch holder that will make up the back. 21+ 21 + 39 = 81.

OK - this is the step of the pattern:
“Attach yarn at the underarm on right side of work and K across body (81 sts.)”

In the attached picture, I have put a red dot next to what I think are the underarms, but I don’t know if the right is the right when looking at the outside of the sweater or the inside. In any event, how can I do what the pattern is telling me without closing up the sweater in some weird way? This is so hard to describe…

Can anyone help?

Thanks again!

P.S. Here is the link to the pattern if it helps:

Yes, the dot is at the underarm. But the `right side of work’ doesn’t mean the right/left side, but the right/wrong side. In other words, you should start on the left side, ready to work on the right/knit side of the sweater. Did you knit the 21 stitches before you put them on the holder? Then you’d start at the left underarm, knit across the back, and then knit the 21 stitches on the other side.

edit: and now I see that you marked both underarms and you did knit the first 21 sts before putting them on the holder. Pictures don’t always show up when you reply.

Thanks, but if they say “Attach yarn at the underarm on right side of work and K across body (81 sts.)” and I only “start at the left underarm, knit across the back, and then knit the 21 stitches on the other side”, I wouldn’t wind up with 81 stitches?

I don’t want to knit across the sleeve, so that’s really what’s throwing me off.

Thanks!

Maybe that’s a typo. I’ve made a sweater based on this pattern. Just start at the left underarm, go across the back and other front. On the reture row, you’ve got the 81 sts.

Thanks for helping. My question is, if I “start at the left underarm, go across the back and other front” won’t I have a long string of yarn over the inside of the sleeve? I’m not really sure how to connect these three sections to get my 81 stitches.

I might have to drop this issue and just improvise! Thank you!

As you knit the sides and back of the body, you’re sleeves will pull together into, well, a sleeve shape rather than lying flat.

When you knit acroos, the sleeves will join together like they will when you seam them up. If you want, you could seam them before you finish the rest.

Thank you! You are all so patient and have helped me out… I can’t wait to finish my sweater! Thanks again! :muah:
