help with stylecraft 9318

Hi

I’m getting in a muddle with this pattern on the sleeve head shaping as I can see two ways to interpret it. The wording is (leaving out all the other size options !)

Dec 1 stitch at end of next 11 rows then at each end of every 5 foll alt rows 58 sts

so assuming the next row is row 1 do i decrease on rows 2,4,6,8 and 10
or on rows 10,20,30,40 and 50.

If its the first option wouldn’t it say on the next 5 alt rows rather then every 5??? Logic tells me it should be this but there is a huge difference and I don’t want to get it wrong.

It uses the same instruction later

Dec 1 st at each end of following 4th row (1 times) then every 5 foll alt rows, then every row to 22 stitiches

If you call the next row, row 1, the decrease one stitch at the end of rows 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10 and 11. Then decrease at each end of row 13,15,17,19 and 21. That’s 21sts decreased total.

Its the use of the word every in the bold bit that confuses me. So after the next 11 rows do i then decrease every other row 5 times, or is it every 5th alternate row ie at 10 row intervals. the number of stitches will be the same but in one case the decrease will be over 10 rows and in the other over 50 !!!

Usually a pattern would say on the NEXT 5 following alternate rows if it was over 10 rows and this is how it phrases it in other parts of the pattern…hence the confusion

It’s really the designer’s choice so exact wording differs from one designer to another and even from pattern to pattern. The 5 following alternate rows would be every other row for a total of 5 times. Decrease in every one of these alternate rows.
