Help with stitches numbers

Hello,

I would appreciate any help you can give. I am a beginner knitter and I am trying to knit this poncho. http://www.marymaxim.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_10001_10054_36345_-1_15037_15040

After casting on 190 sts, the very first line of the pattern states this K78, PM, (this is where I am running into trouble), Worked over 34 stitches: P1, C2B, p1, k2tog, yo, k5, yo, sl 1, k1, psso, k8, k2tog, yo k5, yo, sl 1, k1, psso, p1, C2B, p1, PM, k78.

The trouble I am having is I think the pattern is telling me this needs to be worked using 34 stitches but I am running 4 stitches too short. I have tore apart my piece 3 times already so now I am only working with the 34 stitches to see if I can figure out where I am going wrong. When I count the stitches, I come up with 38.

Any ideas? I am lost.

I get 34 stitches, so I suspect that you’re using too many for one of the stitches. Let’s see

P1, C2B, p1, k2tog, yo, k5, yo, sl 1, k1, psso, k8, k2tog, yo k5, yo, sl 1, k1, psso, p1, C2B, p1, PM, k78.

P1 = 1
C2B = 2
P1 = 1
k2tog = 2
yo uses no stitches
K5 = 5
yo
sl,k,psso = 2
k8 = 8
k2tog = 2
yo
k5 = 5
yo
sl,k,psso = 2
p1 =1
C2B = 2
p1 = 1

All together =34

I suspect that you’re counting 4 for the C2B. This is more of a twist that only uses 2 stitches.

OMG thank you so much for breaking that down for me. Like I said I am still way new to knitting and I misunderstood the whole yarn over concept. I thought it included doing a stitch so for each yo I was doing an extra stitch which accounted for 4 extra stitches.

Many knitters think that you have to knit a stitch for a YO, but you just knit the next stitch in the pattern after wrapping the needle.
