Help with stitch count please

King cole 4838
I’m just doing a swatch to see how this pattern works but my stitches don’t work out.

Row 1. K4 * yfwd, s1, k1, psso, k1, k2tog, yfwd, k1, rep from * to last 3 stitches, yfwd, s1, k1, psso, k1
Row 2. Purl
Row 3. K5, yfwd, * k3, yfwd, rep from * to last 2sts, k2
Row 4. Purl
Row 5. K3, k2tog, yfwd, s1, k1, psso, k1, k2tog, yfwd, * s1, k2tog, psso, yfwd, s1, k1, psso, k1, k2tog, yfwd, rep from * to last 6 sts, s1, k2tog, psso, yfwd, s1, k1, psso, k1

My trouble is Row 5. After the plates I only have 5 stitches instead of 6, or if I don’t do the last k2tog of the rep then I have 7 instead of 6.
I have tried this a few times.

Not sure what I’m doing wrong.

How many sts do you have cast on or how many after row 3?

I have 47 at the end of row 3.

As I’m doing a swatch and wasn’t sure how many to cast on what I did was cast on a random number, then worked row 1 accurately to the correct number to finish the row and then removed a few extra stitches to a holder.
Row 3 seemed to work out right.

This is about the 4th time I’ve tried to swatch this, I keep thinking j have an error in my knitting because I never get row 5 to add up.
I’m writing down numbers and scratching my head but just can’t work it out at all. I can usually count stitches.

I must be knitting it all wrong

The problem is in Row 1 with the cast on of 47sts. There are 4sts before the repeat and 3sts after to begin the row. That leaves 40sts for the repeat which takes 6sts. You can’t work a 6stitch repeat evenly on 40sts.

Row 3 adds more stitches than there were in row 1.
I worked out I had missed a yfwd on row 3, had to tink back to find it.

I’ve worked out row 1 had 37 stitches, and it increases to 48 on row 3, not 47.
Row 5 works.

Maybe this is just too hard for me.
Thank you for your support.

It may just take working this slowly, counting sts and using markers between repeats. It’s easy to skip yarn overs but it’s also fairly simple to pick up the strand between sts on the next row to make up for the skipped yarn over. You’re on the right track and it is a pretty pattern which is worth the effort.

Oh that’s a great tip about the yarn over, thanks.

I have managed the 12 row repeat on my swatch.

Thanks again
