Help with starting sleeves?

I am knitting this http://www.lionbrand.com/patterns/kts-816AD.html sweater for a friend of mine’s baby-to-be. I’m down to where I begin the sleeves and, as a true beginner, I’m just not getting it. It says with pins, mark 4" down from shoulder bind off on Front and Back of sweater. With RS facing, pick up and k 16 sts between these markers.

The way I’m reading this is to put a pin 4" down from the shoulder on both the front & back of the sweater’s outside edge (the side that will be seamed). Then pick up and knit 16 stitches between the outside edge of the shoulder down to the pin & do this on both the front & back (which will make a total of 32 stitches). Is that correct or am I completely off base? TIA!

If you place a pin 4" down from the shoulder bind off on the front, and one 4" down on the back, you will have two pins defining the section from which you have to pick up the stitches.

With the right side of the sweater facing, you need to pick up a total of 16 stitches between these two pins. So you would start picking up stitches at one pin, pick up 8 up to the shoulder, then pick up another 8 till you reach the other pin. A total of 16 stitches.

This is a bulky yarn and the tension/gauge is 8 stitches per 4 inches, so that fits with 8 stitches on the front part and 8 on the back, each section measuring 4 inches.

I think it’s supposed to be 16 stitches total between those spots.

Ooooooohhhhhhh! I’ve got it now. I had the right idea, just doubling the # of my stitches. Thanks to both!!!
