Help with square 23 Great American Afghan

Hi Ladies,

I am 8 squares away from finishing the Great American Afghan and am stuck on Meg Swansen’s square 23. I don’t understand the butterfly thing. Round 5 says "using 4 CC butterflies (1 on each needle) {K3 MC, k1 CC, k2, MC} 4 times

I know it is how you tie in the I cord, but I just can’t figure it out. Any help is greatly appreciated!!!

Thank You!

The ‘butterflies’ are really just strands of the contrasting color. If you used a bobbin, or let the strand hang, it would be the same thing. By knitting in the round, the end of the cc is in the wrong spot for regular intarsia, but by pulling it tightly when you work the next round, you get the icord bump.

The knot in the icord is achieved by tying an actual knot–she describes it at the end of the pattern.

Thank you for the clarification, I think I got it now. :knitting:
