Help with sleeve increase

Hi,

I am making my first sweater (a small one for my son) and I am confused about the pattern directions for increasing the sleeves. It says.

Cont in Stocking st, inc 1 st each end of second and every foll 4th row until there are 86 sts on the needle.

Does this mean that once I start the stockinette stich, I increase the next row at the first stich and the last stich on the needle? Then do the same after I complete 3 more rows? And then increase after every full 3 rows are done? Does that make sense? So will all the increases be done on the same type of stich (as in every other knit row)? I hope what I have said makes some sort of sense.

 Thank you

What you said not only made sense, but is exactly what you’re supposed to do!

Thank you so much. I just wanted to be clear before I started.

I am having trouble figuring out the rows for my sleeve increases. My guage and row count are right on so it has to be my interpretion of the sleeve shaping. The instructions read as follows:
(RS)Beg this row,inc 1 st each side every 12 rows 2 times, then every 10 rows 7 times= 64 sts.
(46 stitches on needles to begin shaping).
I increased each end on rows specific to shaping: Rows 12, 24 (2x every 12 rows) then every 10 rows 7 times. I worked this on rows 34,44,54,64,74,84,94 for 64 stitches. Problem is that on row 84 my sleeve is 19.5 inches and I am at 62 stitches. The total length after shaping the cap is 18.5 inches. I have not even started on shaping the cap. I have way too many rows.
At the beginning increase 1 st each side every 12 rows 2 times; is that rows 1 and 12 and then move on to every 10 rows 7 times?
Thank you very much for your help.

The sleeve length is figured from the underarm to wrist, then the cap would be another 6-8". Can you post a link to your pattern? If the schematic measurements are as you say, then obviously your row gauge is off somehow, which can often happen after you begin knitting the piece, even when the swatch may be ‘right’.
