Hi… I’m new to the site and grateful to have found it! I used to knit a lot as a teenager but haven’t done much at all in the last 40 years… plus my big mistake was always allowing Mum to do the hard bits like knitting up stitches for necks and shoulders, and now I’m struggling. I’ve knit a Patons Baby Jumper but I’m having trouble understanding the instructions for the shoulder bands.
I’ve done what it says for the front and the back shoulder bands but surely there are two more bands to do to match up, otherwise how can it work? Why doesn’t the pattern tell me to repeat for the remaining shoulder bands, or am I supposed to just know that? Or perhaps I’m missing something entirely??? Any help would be much appreciated!
Help with Shoulder Bands
Welcome to KH!
The sweater looks adorable.
The front and back shoulder bands are fine. When the directions say “left front shoulder edge” they mean the left as if you were wearing the sweater. You’ve put the shoulder bands on the right shoulders. That works perfectly regardless of the directions. You don’t have to change anything.
The other shoulder is joined and seamed as you would usually seam a shoulder, no extra button and buttonhole bands needed. Then you pick up sts for the collar all around the neck including on the edges of the bands. Leave the neck open at the shoulder bands. Before you seam the sleeves to the body, overlap the front and back bands with the buttonhole band on top.
Your knitting is lovely and even. Enjoy finishing up!
Thank you so much!
I’m really pleased with the end result and at age 59, I can say it’s the first jumper/cardigan I’ve done ’all by myself’ (ie without Mum’s help)!!!
It is perfection! That little sweater is so adorable. Well done, you!
That is a beautiful knit! Would you mind sharing the pattern code as I would like to buy it to knit?
