Help with scarf

Hi – I’m new to knitting and am currently working on a scarf using a pattern
that was included with the yarn I purchased. The instructions are to knit the first row, then on the 2nd row, knit 1, purl 1, alternating rows 1 and 2 until the end of scarf.

The problem I am having is that the scarf is starting to curl on the sides. Is there a way to correct this problem? I have about 18 inches of the scarf completed and I want it to look nice. It’s for my daughter. I don’t mind redoing the scarf if that’s my only alternative.

You could knit the first and last 3 sts of EACH row, giving it a garter st border and work the pattern in between…that should prevent the curling.
