Help with scarf & hat set - yarn & pattern

Hi all

I’m fairly new to knitting and have recently made my first scarf, my first jacket (still to assemble as I need a yarn needle!) and an ‘extreme knitting’ scarf with big needles and 4 balls of wool.

For my next project, I want to make a statement scarf and matching hat - I want the scarf to be HUGE like this: http://www.hush-uk.com/accessories/scarves/crochet-scarf-grey-marl.html

My questions are:
Can someone recommend a really soft super chunky wool for this - I really like Sirdar Indie but want something either one colour or slightly marled?

Can someone suggest a pattern for a large scarf like this? Really I just want an idea of how wide and how long it should be to make sure the proportions are right.

I’d also like a tightly fitting hat pattern - like a pull-on beanie that’s not baggy. Any suggestions?

One last thing - the knitting kit I got for my last scarf contained some gorgeously soft ‘eyelash’ yarn - I think that’s the word (very fine, stretch yarn with lots of fine strands coming off it). I don’t usually like this type of thing but this is lovely because it’s so fine and soft, and the strands aren’t too long. I have no idea what make or type of wool this is - can anyone suggest anything similar?

Thanks so much - this place is fantastic, my knitting has come on so much since I joined!

The stitch looks like a brioche or Fisherman’s rib which if you knit on big needles won’t look quite like the picture you posted because it’s machine knit, but it’ll be close, and it’s a very cushy stitch. Just take the yarn and needles and work up a sample of 12 to 16 sts and see how wide that is. You might just get the width you want and can keep on going.

Thanks so much - the fishermans rib looks fab, I will definitely use that.

Would love a yarn recommendation - I still haven’t worked with too many and have to buy them online. I prefer chunky yarns but my main goal here is for something really soft and nice to wear, in a neutral shade.

Thanks again

There’s so many - and I don’t know if you’re in the US, Canada, UK or where. Knitpicks.com is good for US/Canada, elann.com for Canada and I think they ship overseas. Do you have a Walmart or chain craft store near you - Hobby Lobby, Joann’s, Michaels, AC Moore? They do have nice acrylic yarns that are soft as well.
