Just take the strand of yarn and begin knitting with it. Leave a long enough tail to weave in when you’re done.

Most things about knitting are easier than you think and mostly just common sense.
A frien of mine makes a new slip knot and knits 2 tog (knit 2 stitches together) with the 1st original stitch on the needle. Works a treat and very secure
good idea, really, when the fabric is dense enough that that stitch does not show through. I have done stuff similar to that before (like a knot around the needle. But the slip knot is good.
