Help with reducing the number of stitches of a pattern

Hello everyone,

First of all this is such a great site!

Secondly, I started knitting a few months ago and decided to knit a scraf, however, I’m using bigger yarn and needles than what the pattern suggested and so I need to reduce the number of stitches, instead of 30 sticthes, I did 20. When I did this, it just didn’t look the same.

So I was wondering if someone could help me revise the pattern. Here’s the orginal pattern.

Row 1: K30
Row 2: K30
Row 3: K5, P2, K3, P2, K5, P2, K3, P2, K6
Row 4: K5, P2, K3, P2, K5, P2, K3, P2, K6
Row 5: K5, P2, K3, P2, K5, P2, K3, P2, K6
Row 6: K5, P2, K3, P2, K5, P2, K3, P2, K6
Row 7: K5, P2, K3, P2, K5, P2, K3, P2, K6
Row 8: K5, P2, K3, P2, K5, P2, K3, P2, K6
Row 9: K5, P2, K3, P2, K5, P2, K3, P2, K6
Row 10: K5, P2, K3, P2, K5, P2, K3, P2, K6

Then the second set of 10 rows is slightly different.

Row 1: K30
Row 2: K30
Row 3: P5, K2, P3, K2, P5, K2, P3, K2, P6
Row 4: P5, K2, P3, K2, P5, K2, P3, K2, P6
Row 5: P5, K2, P3, K2, P5, K2, P3, K2, P6

Kite…at the beginning of the pattern does it tell you to CO 30 OR A MULTIPLE OF ____ + _____ ? Where is this pattern from?

After reading that pattern, I don’t see how the author would increase or decrease it by 10s. :??

One thing you might try instead is casting on 21 stitches and just decreasing each stitch change by one. For example:

Pattern says: K5, P2, K3, P2, K5, P2, K3, P2, K6 = 30

   Try with:     K4, P1, K2, P1, K4, P1, K2, P1, K5 = 21

See if this gives the fabric you were looking for.
