Help with reading pattern (sleeve increases)

Hello. I am knitting my first ever baby jumper (only scarves previously!) and am stuck on reading the pattern on the sleeves. Can someone translate for me?!

This is the bit in full:

Rib 3, inc in next st, *rib 8, inc in next st, rep from * to last 3 sts, rib 3. 38 sts.

Does this mean rib (its k2, p2 by the way) 3 stitches, and on the fourth increase by one? If so, does the ‘rib 8’ start on the 5th and newly cast stitch?

Sorry for the basic question and thanks so much.

Oops, just realised that I also don’t understand something else!

If I increase by one stitch, it will mess up my rib by throwing it out by one stitch. Do I rib the first 3 and then at the ‘inc in next st’ work the fourth and also the 5th ‘new’ stitch as one?

I hope that makes sense! Thanks again.

You would work three stitches in rib as it’s been established, and then increase in the next stitch. The stitch after that increasing stitch is the first of the 8 you will work in the established rib and then increase in the 9th; work 8 more, increase in 9th, until you get to the end.

You have to look at your knitting and work the stitches as they were worked before–knit the knits and purl the purls to keep the rib going.

I’m curious what they say to do in the next row, though, to keep the ribbing even.

Thanks so much Ingrid, you’re a star (especially for replying so quick - I can carry on now!).

That makes perfect sense. As for the next row, I should have said that it then swops to stocking stitch so it should all work out. The rows before were rib.

Oh, ok, that does make sense.
